I share this family story during a month when our theme is books about Christmas trees, which I love. However, this particular memory is slightly off-target – nothing new for me. I was thinking this Christmas month about a quirky way our family celebrates reunions, whether during wonderful holiday seasons like this or otherwise.
We do not know the exact origin of this wacky tradition. We assume at some point Mom and Dad concluded the following: After the kids grow up and move away reunions become special. There are few experiences as rich with laughter and meaning as reuniting with loved ones you haven’t seen for months or perhaps years. Here is the quirk. In our family it follows that if reunions are fun surprise gatherings are even more enjoyable. Allow me to illustrate.

YOUR TURN
Write about a special family gathering your remember – one around the holidays. What made it so special? Who was there? Was it a surprise for any family members?
Close your eyes and paint a picture in your mind and then write – write – write. Just write everything you “see” in your mind. Maybe take a minute to make a call to a sister/brother or cousin to ask them what they remember. Then shape all those words and memories into a short story. It doesn’t have to be perfect, it just has to be from your heart.
